PALO ALTO, Calif., Aug 18, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Based on its recent analysis of the personal care market for U.S. specialty conditioning polymers, Frost & Sullivan is pleased to present Nalco Company with the 2008 North American Green Excellence Award for Global Leadership. This award is in recognition of the company's proactive realization of credible, cost-effective mitigation of adverse environmental impacts and sustainable development initiatives. The company's excellence in delivering sustainability is also evident in its development of novel "green" products and its ability to be a potential change agent within the personal care specialty chemical industry.
"Nalco has proven to be proactive in mitigating the potentially adverse environmental effects of production processes and was one of the founding members of Responsible Care(R), the chemical industry's international standard for environmentally safe business practices," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Christopher Shanahan. "Nalco is also a proactive supporter of the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals legislation (REACH), which is the European Union's (EU) effort to regulate the chemical industry so as to protect people and the environment from the possible hazards tied to chemical products."
Besides creating and implementing production initiatives that minimize environmental and other impacts, Nalco is also committed to developing programs that are safe for the environment and based on naturally derived raw ingredients. For example, Nalco's Sensomer(R) CI-50 conditioning polymer is a liquid polysaccharide produced from naturally derived potato starch. In addition to adding softness, combability, moisturization and increased shine to hair care formulas and providing skin care products with increased suppleness, foam stability and moisturization qualities, Sensomer(R) CI-50 polymer is also not genetically modified and is safe for the environment because it is free of toxins.
The development of Ultimer(R) polymers is another good example of Nalco's motivation to create innovative solutions -- both liquid solutions and end-user solutions. Specifically, the Ultimer(R) product line is a concentrated salt solution that is dispersed with a conditioning polymer, such as a polyquaternium or an acrylate copolymer. These polymers do not contain oils, having eliminated the use of these non-renewable materials from advanced formulations.
By offering these advanced programs and customer solutions, Nalco aids in the sustainable operation and development of its customers' plants and processes. That, along with its activities at its own facilities, warrants Nalco's recognition as a global leader in best practices for sustainable development.
"Not only has Nalco Company participated in socially beneficial and environmentally sustainable actions, it has also adopted business practices that are economically sustainable," continues Shanahan. "Specifically, Nalco has been aggressively stabilizing or shrinking the environmental impact of its production processes while continuing to increase production and grow business."
Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated a concerted initiative towards envisioning and implementing a strategic framework for institutions, communities and nations at a global level to adopt sustainable and environmentally conscious practices. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
